wow THANK YOU so much for sharing this! Such powerful and deep thoughts that has been encapsulated by a few, but yet, simple characters- that's why I admire those ancient Chinese philosophers. I was just a passer-by, but I was so glad that I have trekked upon your blog. Although I've always been keen to read the original script of those Chinese philosophies for a long time; I just never knew where to begin because; firstly I was helplessly dazzled and lost in the sheer volume of them; and secondly, I found it daunting to read ancient Chinese as it was something I was not used to read. Despite my Chinese root, the language challenges appeared as a huge stumbling block as I was brought up in the UK. Nevertheless, your blog has totally changed my perception and now, I am not afraid anymore. At present, I personally find those words of 大学 in your blog particularly meaningful and inspiring. You have hit me with a 'lifequake', a constructive one! I wholeheartly appreciate how you share your thoughts with the world. So, thank you once again and please keep it up! Ps I'm also a physics student; I hope you do well in your studies and hope your new year will be filled with smiles and laughter. Also, thanks for reading through this long and boring comment!
you are very welcome, and i am very glad that it has helped you in some way. Chinese culture is very profound, but sadly fewer and fewer people are capable or are willing to spend the hours to appreciate them.
I am very happy to read your comment :)
studying chinese on your own can be difficult, but feel free to talk to other people about it or just post a comment here!
I hope all the best to your studies as well. you have also given me some directions and motivation for writing the next few entries.
Absolutely. There is so much to learn from ancient Chinese scholars!
Thanks for your suggestions. I just can't wait to go back home during the Easter holiday to share and discuss all this with my dad and my three year old brother! Hmm.. maybe my brother is too young for this now, but I'll definitely try to encourage him to read them once he's a bit older. ^^
I've also realised that it is quite hard to get my Chinese friends interested even though they all read. It is a little frustrating to see them missing out on the good stuff whilst watching them 'worshipping' the materialised world.
I came across the following interesting extract as I continued to read the rest of 大学:
"所谓诚其意者,毋自欺也。如恶恶臭,如好好色,此之谓自谦。故君子必慎其独也。
...
富润屋,德润身,心广体胖,故君子必诚其意。"
Right now, I am addicted in spreading the works of Chinese philosophers; imagine what a wonderful world it would be once everybody understood those meanings? I know, I have simplified things too much but I still believe if I tried hard enough I can make a little difference. I believe people are kind at heart but we are just forced to follow the set of codes of conduct given by the society, which as a result, turns us selfish in order to become successful in the our increasingly competitive habitat. It is probably immature to think sporadic acts like mine could push forward the temperament of the nation but at least, it would spread some smiles across the faces of those people. As a physicist, I should believe it is an act to decrease the entropy of the system, as it results in a more ordered system. =) Besides, there's no harm in starting with the friends around me- the worst it could happen is that I get cut off as soon as I want to talk about Chinese philosophy again. =p
大学will keep me occupied for a while because it is still not an easy read for me. Would you mind if I ask you for some recommended readings once I finish 大学, at some near future?
Apologies for a long post again, I'll try to learn not to ramble next time. ^^
oh yes, and good luck with writing your new blog entries. I look forward to them. :)
I think all big projects or community events started off small. Although the environment is not quite suitable, i believe your effort will definitely pay off. Either for the few fortunate individuals or groups of friends.
Yes you can definitely ask for recommendations. But honestly i have not read any of them in detail yet, but there are a few famous ones with probably quite familiar phrases. I may need to set aside a significant amount of time in summer doing reading (unfortunately my easter might be spent revising for exams)
you have a 3-year-old brother? haha i have brother who is only 5 years old.
don't worry about the rambling. it's actually quite nice and motivating to read such long comments
